Colombia's 'Jaguar' rifle aims for Latin American military market

Sputnik Mundo

Colombia develops the 'Jaguar' rifle to replace Israeli Galils. Lightweight and jungle-adapted, it targets exports to neighbors after real combat testing, says analyst Erich Saumeth.

Colombia has unveiled its new 'Jaguar' rifle, designed to replace Israeli-made Galil rifles in its military arsenal. According to defense analyst Erich Saumeth in statements to Sputnik, the weapon will be 'extremely lightweight' and specifically adapted for operations in jungle regions, a common environment across much of Latin America.

Saumeth emphasized that developing weapons tested 'in real situations' of combat gives Colombia a significant advantage. This practical experience will allow the country not only to modernize its own armed forces but also to position itself as a reliable military supplier for the region.

The 'Jaguar' rifle represents an important step in the autonomy of Colombia's defense industry. By creating a weapon tailored to local geographic conditions, Colombia reduces its dependence on foreign suppliers and builds its own technological capacity.

This advancement opens the door to potential sales to neighboring countries in Latin America, which often face similar operational challenges in jungle environments. Exporting combat-tested weaponry could make Colombia a relevant player in the regional defense market, diversifying its economy and strengthening strategic cooperation.
