BBC embroiled in new pedophile scandal

BBC fired presenter Scott Mills after investigations into sexual abuse of a minor. Latest in series of child sex scandals at the British broadcaster.

The BBC has been embroiled in another child sexual abuse scandal, this time involving Radio 2 breakfast show star Scott Mills. The British state broadcaster confirmed on Monday that it fired Mills "following allegations about his personal conduct," without elaborating further. According to Sky News, the presenter was investigated over alleged sexual abuse of a child under 16, the UK's age of consent.

The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation in December 2016 relating to "allegations of serious sexual offenses against a teenage boy." The alleged crimes reportedly took place between 1997 and 2000. In July 2018, a man in his 40s was questioned by police under caution, but the probe was eventually dropped due to lack of evidence.

Mills was among the highest-paid BBC stars, earning over £355,000 ($473,000) annually according to the corporation's 2024-2025 pay report. This case adds to a long record of crimes against minors committed by BBC personalities.

Notable cases include Jimmy Savile, Stuart Hall, and Rolf Harris, who all abused children while working for the broadcaster. Savile, who died in 2011, allegedly abused up to 450 victims over five decades. In 2024, presenter Huw Edwards was sentenced for possessing indecent images of children, receiving a six-month sentence suspended for two years.
