Iran Claims Downing of US F-35 (PHOTOS)

Iranian media says they shot down a US F-35 jet, while US officials confirm loss of an F-15. Search for crew ongoing amid conflicting reports.

Iranian media outlets, including the Tasnim news agency, have claimed that the Iranian military shot down a US F-35 fighter jet over its territory. In contrast, American officials have confirmed the loss of an F-15 jet, not an F-35, and reported that one of the two crew members has been rescued, with search efforts still underway. Photos and videos purporting to show the crash site have been released, depicting debris with an inscription reading 'US Air Forces in Europe,' indicating the aircraft might be part of the US Air Force's 494th Squadron based at RAF Lakenheath in the UK.

Iran has touted the downing as a success of its indigenous defense systems, and local media reports that the US rescue operation 'failed,' involving at least two Black Hawk helicopters and a C-130 Hercules aircraft, with one helicopter allegedly damaged. Tasnim also suggests that the ejected pilot may have been captured by Iranian forces in western Iran.

This incident occurs amid a bombing campaign launched by the US and Israel against Iran since February 28. Iran has previously claimed to have shot down at least two F-35 jets since the war began, though the US military has denied these claims. Satellite imagery and drone footage suggest Iran has managed to hit several US radars in the region and destroy aircraft such as an E-3 Sentry AWACS.

The discrepancy between Iranian and US accounts regarding the type of aircraft downed highlights the ongoing tensions, with Iran asserting itself as a formidable regional force. Rescue operations and the search for the second crew member continue, as the broader conflict implications are closely watched.
